Phil Perry Wildlife Photos: Leopard Profiles: Leopard Profiles: Shangwa
Shangwa means scented thorn (Acacia nilotica) in Tsongaan. She lost her first two litters, as is not uncommon for leopard mothers. Her third litter was triplets and a male & female cub are still surviving. The female , now called Makubela, has set up territory in a part of Shangwa's. The male, who left the area for a while, has now moved back to live in an area north of the Sand river, adjacent/overlapping his mother's territory. Her 4th litter, two female cubs, are now more or less independant. Shangwa now appears to be pregnant with her 5th litter. Unfortunately Shangwa often spends quite a lot of time out of the western sector's traversing area, in neighbouring Singita, where she was born in 1998. She normally mates with Othawa male, who is the likely father of her cubs.
